Frequently asked questions
Common questions about GoReefers, its logistics services, the Root2Go platform, and what is involved in moving perishable and general cargo out of South Africa.
About GoReefers
What does GoReefers do?
GoReefers is a South African logistics provider offering end-to-end cold-chain and general freight services — bookings, container transport, cold storage, airfreight, export documentation, customs clearance and real-time shipment tracking — moving perishable and dry cargo from origin to destination worldwide.
Where is GoReefers based?
GoReefers is based in South Africa and operates from the Western Cape, moving cargo from South African origins to markets worldwide.
Is GoReefers part of a larger group?
Yes. GoReefers is a key pillar within the GoGlobal Group, which also provides international freight and related business services.
How long has GoReefers been operating?
GoReefers was founded in 2001 and has been operating in perishable and general cargo logistics for more than -31 years.
What makes GoReefers different from other South African freight forwarders?
GoReefers operates as a one-stop hub rather than a single-service provider: bookings, container transport, cold storage, cold chain monitoring, export documentation, customs clearance, airfreight, finance and shipment tracking are delivered by one company working from one set of shipment data. For temperature-sensitive cargo this matters, because the handovers between separate providers are where the cold chain usually breaks.
What proportion of GoReefers business comes from long-term clients?
72% of GoReefers' shipping volume comes from customer relationships of ten years or longer.
Services
What is a one-stop logistics hub?
A one-stop logistics hub is a provider that handles every stage of a shipment — booking, transport, storage, monitoring, documentation, customs and tracking — rather than covering one leg and handing the rest to third parties. The practical benefit is fewer handovers, one accountable party, and a single consolidated view of where cargo is.
Does GoReefers handle both perishable and dry cargo?
Yes. GoReefers handles temperature-controlled perishable cargo and general dry cargo across the same end-to-end service.
What is reefer container shipping?
Reefer container shipping moves cargo in refrigerated containers that hold a set temperature throughout the journey. It is how fresh produce, meat, dairy and other perishables are shipped internationally without losing shelf life in transit.
What is cold chain monitoring and why does it matter for fresh produce?
Cold chain monitoring is the tracking and recording of temperature and cargo condition from packing through to delivery. It matters because produce held outside its required temperature loses shelf life permanently, and without monitoring that loss is usually only discovered at destination, when nothing can be done about it.
What does VGM administration involve?
VGM administration means producing and submitting the verified gross mass of a packed container before loading, as required under the SOLAS convention. GoReefers weighs the container and files the declaration with the shipping line as part of the transport movement.
What export documentation is required to ship fruit from South Africa?
A fruit export shipment typically requires a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and a phytosanitary certificate, with additional documents depending on the destination market’s protocol. GoReefers prepares and files the complete set, including customs entries and letter of credit documentation.
Does GoReefers handle customs clearance?
Yes. GoReefers handles customs entries for sea freight exports and customs clearance for imports arriving in South Africa.
Does GoReefers offer airfreight as well as sea freight?
Yes. Airfreight services cover rate negotiation, bookings, cargo handling and air export documentation, and sit alongside the sea freight operation so a shipment can move between modes without restarting the process.
Can GoReefers finance export logistics costs?
Yes. The GoReefers finance facility consolidates, verifies and pays logistics suppliers, and can supply operating capital to bridge the gap between shipping costs going out and export proceeds coming in.
Does GoReefers handle customs clearance for imports?
Yes. GoReefers prepares and submits customs entries, manages release, and handles tariff classification and duty calculation for imported perishable and general cargo.
Can GoReefers store imported cargo before delivery?
Yes. Both temperature-controlled and ambient storage are available at destination, so cargo can be held between clearance and final delivery without breaking the cold chain.
What is a marine survey and when do I need one?
A marine survey is an independent inspection of cargo condition, usually carried out on arrival. You need one when cargo appears damaged or temperature-compromised, because the surveyor’s report is the evidence a claim rests on.
Can GoReefers arrange a booking at short notice?
Yes. Short-notice and out-of-cycle shipments are handled as special ad hoc arrangements, negotiated directly with the shipping line.
Does the booking include the temperature setting for reefer cargo?
Yes. The booking specifies the equipment type and the temperature regime required for the commodity, so the container is set correctly before the cargo is loaded.
When does airfreight make sense for fresh produce?
Airfreight makes sense when time matters more than cost per kilogram — early-season fruit chasing a market window, high-value produce with a short shelf life, samples, or recovery shipments after a missed sailing.
Can perishable cargo be shipped by air under temperature control?
Yes. Temperature-controlled uplift can be specified at booking, and handling at the airport is coordinated to limit the time cargo spends outside a controlled environment.
What does shipping management include?
Shipping management covers carrier negotiations and contract administration, execution against those contracts, marine insurance and claims handling, and consolidated analysis of freight rates across an exporter’s whole programme.
Can GoReefers manage contracts we hold directly with a shipping line?
Yes. Where an exporter holds its own carrier contracts, GoReefers can manage execution against them rather than replacing them.
Does GoReefers handle marine cargo insurance claims?
Yes. Marine insurance is arranged for cargo in transit, and claims are prepared, submitted and pursued on the client’s behalf using the shipment records already held.
What is a container plug-in and pre-stage service?
It keeps a refrigerated container powered and positioned near the port before the stack opens, so the cargo inside stays at its set temperature instead of losing the cold chain while it waits for the terminal.
Does GoReefers transport containers to and from the farm?
Yes. Container transport covers movements between farm, packhouse, cold store, depot and port terminal.
Does GoReefers provide cold storage at origin and destination?
Yes. Temperature-controlled and ambient storage is available both before export and after import, so cargo can be held at the correct regime at either end of the journey.
What temperature regimes can cargo be held at?
Storage is set to the regime the commodity requires, which varies by product and protocol. Confirm the specific regime for your cargo with the GoReefers team when arranging storage.
What happens if cargo is damaged in storage?
A claim is prepared and managed by the same team that holds the storage records, which means the temperature and handling history supporting the claim is already available.
Does GoReefers provide inspection services?
Yes. Cargo is physically inspected at key points in the journey, and the findings are recorded alongside the temperature history.
Can the monitoring record be used to support a claim?
Yes. The temperature and inspection history is the documentary evidence a condition claim rests on, which is why it is recorded rather than simply observed.
Can GoReefers prepare documents under a letter of credit?
Yes. Documents are prepared strictly to the terms of the credit, because a discrepancy at presentation delays or blocks payment rather than just the cargo.
What happens if a document needs to change after it has been issued?
Documents can be amended and re-issued where shipment details change after original issue, subject to the requirements of the line, the customs authority and any letter of credit in place.
Can Root2Go track shipments that were not booked through GoReefers?
On Ultimate+, documents for non-GoReefers shipments can be viewed, downloaded and uploaded alongside GoReefers cargo, giving one view across a mixed portfolio.
What is the GoReefers finance facility?
It is a service that consolidates, verifies and pays an exporter’s logistics suppliers, and can supply operating capital to bridge the timing gap between shipping costs and export proceeds.
Why would an exporter use a logistics finance facility?
Because export cash flow runs backwards — transport, storage, port and freight costs are incurred before the fruit is sold, while proceeds arrive well after the cargo has moved.
Does GoReefers verify supplier invoices before paying them?
Yes. Invoices are checked against the shipment record before settlement, which is what makes a single consolidated account possible rather than a stack of unreconciled ones.
Root2Go
What is Root2Go?
Root2Go is a centralised logistics platform from GoReefers that provides real-time shipment visibility, consolidated sailing schedules, container tracking, documentation management and industry analytics in one system.
How does Root2Go shipment tracking work?
On Premium subscriptions and above, Root2Go tracks containers on the ocean in real time, records tracking events as they occur, and updates estimated arrival times using daily vessel position data.
What is the difference between the Root2Go subscription tiers?
Lite gives a bookings overview and shipper documentation portal. Basic adds live South African sailing schedules, a bookings portal, exception management and transport tracking. Premium adds live container ocean tracking and transshipment expediting. Ultimate adds international sailing schedules, a receiver documents portal, packing lists and destination dashboards. Ultimate+ adds document handling for non-GoReefers shipments.
What are live sailing schedules and stacks?
Live sailing schedules are daily-updated vessel schedules across shipping lines. Stacks are the windows during which containers can be delivered to the terminal for a particular vessel. Root2Go combines the two, so planning accounts for both when a vessel sails and when cargo can physically be delivered.
What are iRoot Stock, iRoot Fruit Essentials and iRoot Premium?
They are stock and financial management solutions that integrate with GoReefers. iRoot Stock covers stock management with integrated bookings and commercial invoicing. iRoot Fruit Essentials adds debtor management. iRoot Premium is a full ERP covering inventory control, financial reporting, grower payments and audit support.

Our Global Solutions
Questions covering Container Connect, Destination+ and the other GoReefers global solutions.
What is Container Connect?
Container Connect is GoReefers' container equipment access solution. It secures priority allocation of reefer and dry containers for South African exporters during periods when equipment is short, so booked shipments still sail on their intended vessel.
Why are containers short during the South African export season?
Peak export season concentrates demand for reefer equipment into a narrow window. When more exporters need containers than the shipping lines have positioned in the region, equipment becomes the constraint on the whole programme rather than vessel space.
What happens if I cannot get a container in time?
Cargo rolls to a later sailing, which extends cold store dwell, adds storage cost, consumes shelf life and can put a delivery commitment to your buyer at risk. Container Connect exists to prevent that sequence starting.
Does Container Connect cover both reefer and dry containers?
Yes. Priority allocation covers refrigerated and dry equipment, so both temperature-controlled and general cargo programmes can be protected.
What is Destination+?
Destination+ is GoReefers' fully managed destination logistics solution. It brings customs clearance, destination transport, cold storage and final delivery under one accountable provider, with predictable costs agreed in advance.
Which markets does Destination+ cover?
Destination+ currently covers India, the United Kingdom, and Europe through Rotterdam. Each regional offering is built around the local regulations, infrastructure and customer requirements of that specific market rather than being a single generic service.
How is Destination+ different from standard destination handling?
Standard destination handling typically means coordinating a customs broker, a haulier and a cold store separately, each holding part of the picture. Destination+ replaces that with one provider holding the whole shipment record, which is what makes fixed pricing and end-to-end visibility possible.
Does Destination+ handle temperature-controlled cargo?
Yes. Each regional variant includes approved cold storage and reefer handling, because maintaining the cold chain after arrival is the main reason destination logistics matters for perishable cargo.
How can I control destination logistics costs in India?
Fix them in advance. Destination+ India uses fixed door-to-door pricing, so destination charges are agreed before the cargo sails rather than presented after arrival. Verified receiver checks and transparent cost validation remove the two most common sources of unexpected charges.
Does GoReefers handle customs clearance in India?
Yes. Customs clearance is one stage of the Destination+ India solution, alongside trucking, handling, cold storage and final delivery, all managed by one provider.
What is delay insurance and when does it apply?
Delay insurance covers loss arising from qualifying delays at destination. It applies to shipments meeting the policy conditions — confirm the qualifying criteria for your cargo and route with the GoReefers team when arranging the shipment.
Can reefer containers be plugged in while awaiting clearance in India?
Yes. Controlled reefer handling with storage and plug-in rates is part of the solution, so temperature-sensitive cargo stays at its set regime rather than losing the cold chain while clearance completes.
Does GoReefers handle UK customs clearance and cold storage?
Yes. Destination+ UK combines UK customs clearance, destination transport and approved cold storage under one provider, so cargo moves from arrival to storage without changing hands between separate companies.
How is the cold chain protected after arrival in the UK?
Cargo moves into approved UK cold storage facilities under managed reefer handling, and the same provider coordinates clearance and transport. The risk in UK destination logistics is the gaps between providers, so removing the handovers is what protects the chain.
What does transparent pricing mean for UK destination charges?
Destination charges are set out in advance rather than accumulating as separate invoices from customs brokers, hauliers and cold stores after the cargo has arrived.
What happens to my cargo after it arrives in Rotterdam?
Under Destination+ EU, GoReefers coordinates customs clearance, reefer handling and movement into approved cold storage from the point of vessel discharge, so the cargo stays under temperature control and under one provider throughout.
Why does Rotterdam need a specialised destination solution?
Rotterdam is a major European entry point for perishable cargo, and the discharge-to-storage window is where the cold chain is most exposed. Coordinating customs, handling and specialised storage across separate providers is where the delays and temperature excursions occur.
Is cold storage in Rotterdam included?
Yes. Approved cold storage for temperature-sensitive cargo is part of the solution, along with the reefer handling that gets cargo there from the quay.
What is Delivery Direct?
Delivery Direct is GoReefers' port-to-door container delivery solution. It moves containers from the arrival port or terminal to the final destination, with customs clearance, destination transport and final-mile delivery handled by one provider.
Which markets does Delivery Direct cover?
Delivery Direct currently covers the United Kingdom and Europe through Rotterdam.
How is Delivery Direct different from Destination+?
Destination+ is built around destination cost control and cold storage, for cargo that needs holding at destination. Delivery Direct is built around movement — getting the container from the port to the receiver without it stopping. Cargo that needs both can use them together.
Can GoReefers deliver containers door-to-door in the UK?
Yes. Delivery Direct UK covers the full port-to-door journey — UK customs clearance, destination transport and final-mile delivery — managed by one provider with one point of accountability.
Who handles UK customs clearance under Delivery Direct?
GoReefers does, as part of the same managed journey. Clearance is not handed to a separate broker, which is what removes the most common delay point between arrival and delivery.
How do I track a container from the UK port to final delivery?
Shipment visibility runs from port arrival through to final delivery, so the container can be located at each stage rather than only at the port and on arrival at the receiver.
Can GoReefers deliver containers from Rotterdam across Europe?
Yes. Delivery Direct EU coordinates destination documentation, road transport and final delivery from Rotterdam to receivers across the European supply chain.
How is Delivery Direct EU different from Transport Solutions?
Delivery Direct EU is container delivery — moving the container from the port to a receiver. Transport Solutions is a managed road freight lane from Rotterdam to Spain for temperature-sensitive cargo, including cold chain handling in transit.
Does Delivery Direct EU include destination documentation?
Yes. Destination documentation is coordinated as part of the managed journey rather than being handled separately by the receiver or a third-party broker.
What is Citrus Black Spot (CBS)?
Citrus Black Spot is a fungal disease of citrus that produces lesions on the rind. It is a regulated phytosanitary concern in several import markets, most notably the European Union, where its detection in a consignment can result in the shipment being held or rejected.
What is Recovery+?
Recovery+ is GoReefers' cargo recovery solution for consignments held or rejected for Citrus Black Spot. It segregates affected product, holds cargo under controlled cold store conditions and manages re-export to alternative destinations, so commercial value is recovered rather than written off.
What are my options if a consignment is rejected for CBS?
Affected product can often be segregated from unaffected product, and the sound cargo re-exported to a market with different phytosanitary requirements. The alternative — treating the whole consignment as a total loss — is usually avoidable if the cargo is handled quickly and stored correctly while options are assessed.
How quickly does Recovery+ need to be engaged?
As early as possible. Recovery outcomes depend on product condition, and a consignment sitting outside controlled storage while decisions are made loses the shelf life that any re-export option depends on.
Does GoReefers arrange road transport within Europe?
Yes. Transport Solutions is a managed refrigerated road freight service running from Rotterdam to Spain, including cold chain handling in transit and customs support.
Which route does Transport Solutions cover?
Rotterdam to Spain. For other European lanes, contact the GoReefers team — routes outside the standard lane can be quoted on request.
How is the cold chain maintained during road transport?
Temperature is held throughout the journey under professional cold chain handling, so the product arrives in the condition it departed in rather than losing shelf life in transit.
